An Amazon Air cargo plane crashed off a runway at high speed, killing five people in vehicles. The plane, 47 meters wide, damaged vehicles, concrete barriers, and navigation equipment. A system designed to slow down planes that cannot stop at the end of a runway exists in some US airports.
This system, called EMAS, can stop a plane moving at around 129 km/h in a short distance. It is not known if it would have completely stopped the Amazon plane, which was traveling at almost 209 km/h.
