Mars has two small moons whose origin remains unconfirmed. A new investigation may shed light on Deimos, the more distant of the two. Deimos is a small, irregular rock with a potato-like shape. Its name comes from the son of the Greek god Ares, meaning fear in ancient Greek.

Deimos is about 24,000 kilometers from the Martian surface and has been observed by several orbital probes since the 1970s. The European Space Agency's Hera mission recently flew by Deimos in March 2025. Further details about the investigation and Deimos are available from the source.
